Eastern Illinois Writing Project begins every summer institute session with sacred time for teachers to write in their journals.  Co-director Amber Laquet explains EIWP’s weekly “writing crawls” that have become part of the ISI experience:  “One of the best ways we have found to encourage creative writing is to leave the classroom with journals (and sometimes tablet or laptop) in hand and respond to a new setting and set of experiences.”  This summer the teachers left the classroom to explore the Charleston (IL) Courthouse Square, Tarble Arts Center, a local nature center, and Doudna Fine Arts Center, using the time to write, reflect,  and share.
