Tapping the affordances of technology while holding fast to NWP principles and meeting the needs of area teachers are central to the Maine Writing Project's hybrid ISI model.

The annual institute of the MWP completed its third year as a hybrid format: (1) a 14-week, spring semester course entirely online, and (2) an on-campus, seven-day summer institute. We designed the two-part AI with the busy Maine teacher in mind. Travel distances and some teachers’ inability to commit to four weeks of summer study also played a role in developing this hybrid annual institute. The 2013 Maine Writing Project Institute included the following three-credit graduate courses:

  • Introduction to the National Writing Project: a 3-credit course entirely online during the UMaine spring semester. Fellows read about writing and the teaching of writing, respond in online discussion Forums, create a writer’s journal, participate in writing activities, compose creative and informational writing, and receive support for their writing from an online writing response group as well as an experienced Maine Writing Project mentor.
  • Institute in Teacher Leadership: a 3-credit, seven-day institute in July on the UMaine Orono campus. Fellows continue to share their reading response and writing composition face-to-face, participate in discussion on various topics, and develop a teaching demonstration based on their own practice for presentation at our Promising Practices Conference.

The hybrid Annual Institute also extends opportunities to TCs in our site to serve as mentors to the new fellows. In the online component, mentors offer feedback to fellows’ writing and online work; during the summer, mentors work directly with fellows to help with their writing and also with their teaching demonstration. Mentors have a study curriculum of their own in the 3-credit, spring semester, online Seminar in Mentoring, and in the 3-credit,  7-day, July Advanced Institute in Teacher Leadership
