CAPITAL AREA WRITING PROJECT PROMOTES LITERACY EDUCATION WITH CONTINUITY EVENTS

CAWP hosted more than 100 of region’s educators, teachers and administrators, and pre-service teachers during two seminars to promote literacy and professional development.  The Fall Seminar, “Diverse Voices in Literature” featured National Book Award winner Jacqueline Woodson; the Spring Seminar was titled “Non-Fiction Mentor Texts within the Common Core,” with authors Lynn Dorfman and Rose Capelli as guests.

In a weeklong workshop focused on the need to keep students engaged and encouraged with their writing, Ohio University Appalachian Writing Project Director Sherrie Gradin and Co-directors Don Dudding and Talinn Philips led a group of teachers who read Teaching for the Students: Habits of Heart, Mind, and Practice in the Engaged Classroom by Bob Fecho, engaged in informal writing and group discussions, and re-committed themselves to writing pedagogy attuned to expressive development, as opposed to test score improvement.  Participants expressed their frustration with demands fo

The 2015 Eastern Illinois Writing Project Invitational Summer Institute highlighted technology integration in the classroom.  Participants explored and implemented a variety of strategies found in “Crafting Digital Writing,” by Troy Hicks, and “Content Area Writing: Every Teacher’s Guide,” by Daniels and Steineke.  The workshop also featured technology luncheons and interactive demonstrations of various Google apps.
