Modern Day Slavery

I like to do a Modern Day Slavery Project with my English III students.  They research the topic and choose one aspect of modern-day slavery to explore in depth. In the past, they have then written an essay to share their research.  “Dear Mr. Wal-Mart” in Best Teen Writing 2013 would make a great mentor text to use in conjunction with this project.  Instead of having students write a typical essay, they will write a letter to a particular abusive company or organization that they have discovered through their research. Having a model for students to see and critique will enable them to better craft their own letter.
I could initially use this text to analyze rhetorical strategies and/or propaganda techniques.

This is such a great idea! I just started a slavery unit and I would like to use this at the end of the unit. Thanks for the great idea!
